Join me as I take you step by step through my process in painting the simplified figure. Our aim in this workshop will be to paint our subject in proper perspective, with beautiful simplified color mixtures and with special attention to values. Students will learn to spot certain landmarks on the human form, and identify specific gestural movement that makes their subjects unique. We’ll work from a minimal palette of paint colors to simplify color mixing. Come prepared to work hard, and be fearless- You’ll be surprised at how simplifying what we see can say it all
Schedule:
First day/value planning, discussions, and exercises.
Day Two: exploring the landmarks on the form and creating a tonal figure painting.
Day Three: adding color while sticking to our value plan! We will be painting the figure from life. (students who are more comfortable using photos are welcome to refer to those).
BIO/RESUME
Award winning artist, Marjorie Hicks's canvases capture the play of light and the drama of shadow and color that fall on any and all of her subjects. She is also a popular teacher to artists with currently over 50,000 followers on Instagram. John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Henry Potthast among others continue to inspire her works. Marjorie is grateful for the talented and supportive community of artists in Nashville, where she resides. She is equally at home painting commissioned portraits in studio or outdoor scenes in a style inspired by the Impressionists.
Marjorie always seeks to build the confidence of her students by urging them to paint often, and fearlessly!
Vincent Van Gogh said “If you hear a voice within you saying ‘you are not a painter,’ then by all means paint!... and that voice will be silenced.”
