This 3 day oil painting workshop with Richie Carter will focus on painting low light, tonal landscapes. The course is designed for any level of student, from beginner to advanced. Richie teaches from the ground up, focusing on the basics as a way to evolve both the novice, or more developed artist alike.
Students will be working from photo references to complete at least one small preliminary study in order to begin to realize one larger rendition of the same scene and undertake the challenges that come along with this process. The course will address how to use photo references to create effective paintings. Students will learn a subdued tonal palette as well as various techniques with which to render low light scenes. Students will learn over the course of 3 days, both direct and indirect painting methods.
Artist Bio:
Richie Carter was born and raised in North West, Montana. Being brought up in a rural community, he has always had an affinity for the landscape. He obtained his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Montana with a focus in painting. Richie has been featured in a number of art publications as well as being showcased on the back cover of both Plein Air Magazine and International Artist. Among the articles were Southwest Art, 21 under 31, Fine Art Connoisseur, 3 to Watch, and Western Art Collector, The Montana 6. Amidst extensive work-based travel to Europe and abroad, Richie resides and works from his Montana studio.
"When I am not in my studio working on large scale still life and landscape paintings, you can find me out on location gathering reference materials, from the backcountry of Montana, to the deserts of the South West, or on the cobbled streets of various European cities. I love to travel and meet people of different cultures, taking inspiration from a myriad of sources. Painting is a universal visual language that breaks down barriers, and I hope through my own work, it can serve to cultivate authentic human connection. My goal is to make impactful, striking, yet simplistic images that evoke emotion and allow a dialogue to take place between the rich tradition of realism and the contemporary reality of our time."
