Scott Gellatly: Abstracting the Landscape Plein Air to Studio
Supplies:
Plein Air Supplies: For Day 1
Water-based media for plein air sketching: Acrylics will work fine, but if you are using oils in the workshop, please also bring a water-based medium for our day out in the field. This could be watercolor, gouache, acrylics, or casein.
Watercolor Sketchbook: Fabriano or Strathmore
Other: Blue Painters Washi Tape
Paint: Participants can paint in either oils or acrylics. In keeping with the spirit of experimentation, please have your full palette of colors and mediums* that you have on-hand. Here is the palette that I’ll be using and demonstrating with: Cadmium Yellow Light, Indian Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Quinacridone Red, Ultramarine Blue, Turquoise/Cobalt Teal and Titanium White.
* Please do not bring in mediums that contain strong solvents, such as Liquin or any medium containing turpentine. Cold Wax Medium and Galkyd are fine.
Brushes: 2 – 3 flat or bright brushes appropriate for the paint you are using.
Brush cleaner: Thinner appropriate for the paint you are using.** Rags/paper towels.
Recommended: Gamblin Gamsol for oils.
Painting Supports: At least 4 – 5 small panels, approximately 6” x 6”, 6” x 8” or 8” x 10”. 2 – 3 larger panels: 16” x 20”, 18” x 24”. Recommended: Ampersand Gessobord.
Source Material: For Days 2 & 3 We will use the plein air studies from Day 1 or have reference images ready to work from printed or on iPad or laptop. These can be drawings, other paintings or photographs. If photographs, please have them be your own.
