Supply List for Fast, Loose and Bold Painting Workshop

I will be working with acrylics because of the fast dry time, but you can work but you can work in oils.
The colors preceded by an “X” are required. The others are optional but useful.

Colors:
Paint colors:
x quinacridone magenta
x Cadmium Red Light
xYellow Ochre
x Cad. Yellow Light or Medium x Phthalo Blue (green shade)
x Ultramarine Blue
x Titanium White (Large Tube) x Burnt Umber

x ALL students - both oil and acrylic painters - must bring these ACRYLIC paints:
- a small tube of carbon Black paint,
- Titanium White

- Golden #6 Neutral Grey paint (the Grey must be Golden brand)

Optional colors: Cadmium Orange, Dioxazine Purple, Alizarin Crimson, Cad. Red Medium, Sap Green, Green Gold, Burnt Sienna, (and any other colors you like)

Paints:
I use Golden Heavy Body Acrylic paints - they are an excellent quality professional grade paint. You can buy student grade acrylic paints, which are much less expensive, but they dry dull and more transparent because there is less pigment in the paint.

*Painting Subjects:
For all of the exercisises you will be working from my photos. (pdf links will be supplied upon registration)

* Painting from life:
If the workshop is 1-3 days we will not be working from life.

If the workshop is 4 or 5 days and you want to work from life, on day 4 you can bring simple shaped objects to paint - i.e. solid colord vases, fruit, vegetables, flowers, bowls or teacups. Solid colors are preferred to patterned . Clear, reflective glass or complex objects are not preferred.

If you work from life, please bring:
- a lamp with a 75-100 watt lightbulb that will be used to

light your subject. It should stand alone or clamp to a table. Gooseneck style is the best. A cheaper alternative is the clamp lights you buy at Lowes/Home Depot.
- a 20 ‘ extension cord

- colored fabric or paper that can be used as a surface or background to your prop.

- optional: a background support: tape 2 or 3 pieces of mattboard or foam core together to create a backdroop “wall” for your still life set up

- if you choose to work from photos rather than life, no need to bring these supplies. You may bring photos of your choice.

Mediums:
- Acrylic painters: Medium can be used in place of, or in addition to water. I often use “Polymer Medium Gloss” by Golden. The paint “glides” more. This is optional.
- Oil Painters: please bring a small bottle of Liquin in addition to whatever medium you use, and a palette knife.

Brushes for acrylic painters:
I suggest Nylon synthetic flats in varying sizes, from 1/4 to
2” width. You can buy these Leow Cornell brushes all in one package from Michaels or Blick, they are not expensive. Below are some photos of craft nylon brushes that are suitable for acrylics.

Optional: You can also experiment with larger brushes such as the ones below that come 3 to a package 1”, 2”, and 3”. These are synthetic craft brushes, not bristle.

Brushes for Oil Painters
I suggest bristle brushes, or a stiff white synthetic blend fiber designed for use in oils, wa- ter-mixable oils, or acrylics. Many artists like Silver Brush Bristlon brushes for their spring and chiseled tips.

Excellent quality brushes for acrylic AND oil painters is Princeton Catalyst Polytip Brushes (shown here). They have a wonderful spring and retain their shape after repeated use. I use all sizes. They come in all shapes, I prefer flats and use sizes 2,4,6,10,12, 16. I also use a thin script liner brush for small stems and details.

Surfaces to Paint On:
8x10” canvas boards, gessoed panels, or stretched canvasses (bulky). We will mostly be doing exercises, so don’t spend a lot of money!

On every day (EXCEPT THE FIRST DAY) we will be doing 3 fast paintings plus the exercises. So bring 6 canvases/day for those days. You may not use all your canvasses but it is better to have too many than too few.

Palette:
Please bring a disposable paper palette, no smaller than 12x16”. Get the type that is waxy paper, not absorbent. I use “Grey Matters” by Jack Richeson Co.

Other:
- one white canvasboard 8x10 for a value chart
- a container of for water (if using acrylics) or a holder for medium and turps (oil)
- a viewfinder - I use a “View Catcher” to help with composition
- a few sheets of 8x10 tracing paper
- a roll of paper towels
- sketch pad, approx. 5.5x8.5 or larger for small “thumbnail “ sketches. I use Strathmore Toned Grey Paper - A white pastel (if you are using toned grey paper)
- SOFT vine charcoal sticks
- kneaded eraser
- something to carry your wet OIL paintings in
- a plastic bag for trash

- Most important: Bring a spirit of adventure, experimentation and willingness to use paint and color courageously!
