Whenever I arrive at a new place, I immediately ask myself: What colours and shapes best define the neighbourhoods and typical architecture? What about the street life, shops, public buildings and urban details? What makes this place special, worth capturing in my sketchbook?
Join me in Nashville, Tennessee, where we’ll capture the local scenes and street life that make “Music City” (or, if you prefer, the “Athens of the South”) so unique. Our starting point, Warehouse 521, is in Nashville’s Berry Hill neighbourhood, home to many recording studios, local shops and restaurants. In fact, if it's your first time in Nashville, I encourage you to schedule a few days before or after the workshop to experience for yourself this iconic birthplace of country music, to tour its museums, enjoy the food and take in the thriving live music scene in the local cafes and bars.
Keep in mind, that I’ve designed this workshop to give you confidence sketching not just in Nashville, but wherever you happen to be. I’ll show you how to keep your watercolour sketches loose, fresh and vibrant. And I’ll share my techniques for capturing the urban culture that surround us.
We’ll begin each day with a short demo and end with a review, leaving plenty of in-between time to work on your own sketches. As part of a small group, you’ll get plenty of individual attention and feedback, as we work on value studies, colour, vignettes and composition — the essentials to simplifying a scene and capturing its essence. Most important, we’ll make sure to have fun as we sketch and record our daily impressions. At the end of the week, my goal is that you’ll return home with a fat book filled with fresh, colourful sketches — and memories of unique, enchanting Nashville.
