Materials:
Thinner
Use Gamsol, this is odorless mineral spirits for the studio. I use a empty paint bucket with an insert made of hardware cloth to hold my brushes above the paint sludge, give me a surface to scrub them on, and is big enough to hold plenty of brushes and not tip over. Both of these things can be bought at a hardware store, and I will show you how to make it on the first class.
Oil Medium
I use a mix of 1 part stand oil, 1 part damar varnish, 1 part English turpentine. You can use straight linseed oil, or a a pre-made oil medium of your choice.
Oil Paint
This is my palette, feel free to adjust.
Titanium White
Cad Yellow Light
Cad Yellow Medium
Yellow Ochre
Cad Red Medium
Alizarin Crimson
Raw or Burnt Umber
Sap Green or Chromium Oxide
Viridian
Phthalo Deep Green
Perm Green Light
Cerulean Blue
French Ultramarine
When we paint outside, you will need a palette you can hold and an easel you can bring outside (we have a couple extras that can be borrowed.)
Brushes
You will also need a range of brushes, specifically the “bright” shape (this is square), including some large ones, and a palette knife.
Paper towels
I recommend Viva cloth-like paper towels
Painting Surfaces
You will need at least 3 canvases in the 18X24 to 24X30 size range. You should also have some small canvas boards or gessoed wood/masonite for oil sketching in the 8X10 to 16X20 size range. You will also need a sketchbook for the first class when we cover perspective.
