Steven Assael
Materials List Painting March 2023

Choice of supports:

Please bring 4 canvas boards. Ideal sizes 11x14, 12x16, not over 16x20

Steven will most likely demo on a copper panel for his long demo and also give short demos on a cool toned panel and warm toned panel to show differences.

1: You can purchase lead primed canvas, (no acrylic primed), or lead primed canvas on boards (Raphael boards are great, Jerry’s carries them) . Choices are below:

2. Ampersand Smooth Panels You can get these at Dick Blick, Plaza Art or Jerry’s.  These can be toned with Acrylic Paint and then sprayed with shellac (please do this before you come).

3.  Raphael Premium Archival Oil Primed Linen Panels

*Tone your boards/panels in advance with a mid-tone red and mid-tone green.

If the board is oil primed then you need to use oil paint, not acrylic.

Choices of Reds and Greens to tone boards below:

RED’s - cadmium red (or CRL) mixed with a little Venetian red, burnt sienna, or burnt umber. Apply a very very thin coat with gamsol and wipe with a rag. Make sure it’s thin so it will dry.

*Use a thinned (with mineral spirits) red oil paint that will dry. Cadmiums take  a long time to dry so if you use one apply a thin layer and do this in advance

GREEN’s - Cadmium green or Cadmium Green Light mixed with a little raw umber or burnt umber. Apply a very very thin coat with Gamsol and wipe with a rag.

* For this class please have copper available to paint on if this interests you.
