Getting Started in Egg Tempera
There are standing easels and tables available in the studio for students to use during the workshop, but you may bring your own if you prefer.
STUDENTS BRING:
1 Artefex Tempanel 9” x 12” - Panels were ordered for students and will be in the studio on the first day. If you need one please email jeanie @warehouse521@gmail.com if you have not already requested one. The panels are $24.
Paper towels
Palette: Either a Small Butcher Tray Palette (7.5” x 11) OR a sheet of glass with white paper taped to the back (any size between 8” x 10” and 11” x 14”)
Small 1-4 oz mist spray bottle
Palette knife
Tooth brush
Makeup sponge
1ml measured dropper – Plastic is preferable
Measuring spoons – especially ½ tablespoon and 1 tablespoon
Nitrile Gloves (optional)
1 Flat single edge razor blade (optional)
1 3H or 4H pencil OR silverpoint pencil (optional),
1 2B pencil
clean white eraser.
India Ink (small bottle)
Fine grit sandpaper (400 or 600)
A piece of silk cloth (such as an old scarf), or fine cheese cloth
Reference photos of your own choice (optional, bring if you prefer to work from your own reference materials – Julio and Candice will have their own reference to share with you)
Brushes: Sable, synthetic, and/or squirrel. We suggest bringing a variety of your favorite water media brushes, especially those that are small and extra small in size. We will be using mostly rounds and flats.. Rounds, flats and mops in synthetic, squirrel and red sables are very useful. If you don’t have brushes like this already, here are some good recommendations:
Synthetic Flats: Mimik Creative Mark Flat ½”, ¼”
Synthetic Rounds: Mimik Creative Mark Round 8, 6
Synthetic sables: Blick Masterstroke Golden Taklon Flat ¾” and Blick Academic Sable – Red Sable – Oval Wash ½”
Squirrel Hair Mop: Raphael Pure Squirrel Hair Mop – Size 2
Small red sable rounds: Kalish Series 8, round sable sizes 0, 2, 4 or Raphael Kolinsky Red Sable Brushes 0, 2, 4

Raw Pigments from Natural Pigments: Titanium White, Blue Ridge Yellow Ochre, Cad Red Med, Ultramarine Blue Green Shade, Blue Ridge Hematite, Cypress Umber Medium, Bone Black, Hematite, Chrome Yellow Light.
