Seeing values and being sensitive to relative values is the primary skill of every painter and colorist. It is the world of light to dark. To makes things look convincing you need real light and space. This comes from the value relationships. Values are the key to creating light, creating form, and creating composition. Values are the foundation of everything!
If you want to understand color, add drama to your compositions, see in a more painterly and sensitive way, be more free with your shapes and brushstrokes, you must develop skill in seeing and controlling values. If your paintings lack drama, are too fussy, chaotic or tight, you need a better understanding of values.
In this 3.5 day workshop we will approach value through drawing and painting.
The first evening slide lecture will introduce the essential concepts and visual ideas underlying the study of values as well as presenting brilliant examples and a profound demonstration of the universal important of values. Three days of studio work will include many approaches to light, dark, tone, contrast, simplification and the full value range. Each student will work to their own level as we all learn to appreciate the beauty, power and importance of values.
