This two day, 12 hour figure drawing workshop will focus on developing a deeper understanding of the human figure through sustained study from life, with six hours of drawing each day. Working exclusively with live models and red chalk, students will explore the bedrock principles of figure drawing, emphasizing observation, proportion, gesture, structure, and spatial relationships. Particular attention will be given to capturing the dynamic, rhythmic movements of the figure and translating those movements into a sense of form. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and extended poses, we will investigate the planar structure of the body and how major masses and directional changes create rhythm and unity throughout the figure. Students will develop an understanding of how line, tone, and planar organization can work together to describe both the underlying structure of the body. The workshop will encourage a direct and disciplined approach to drawing while allowing students to develop sensitivity to the expressive qualities of the human form. By the end of the five days, students will have strengthened their ability to construct dynamic, structurally sound figure drawings from observation.
