Painting a convincing figure is difficult because it is a complex and expressive form which is modified by the slightest gesture. One of the biggest challenges is learning to see the unity of the figure instead of a collection of small details. In this workshop we will focus on seeing forms made visible by planes of light, and on discovering the gesture that makes a figure painting come to life. We will study the major forms of the figure (clothed), some basic anatomical principles, simplification of color and light, as well as arranging the figure and the expressive nature of its surrounding space. Previous figure drawing experience required.
This intensive painting workshop begins with an evening introduction (lecture and slide show), then three full days of painting from the live model in both short and long poses. A balance of painting time, individual attention, group critiques and demonstrations will provide an exciting setting for creative growth.
