Drawing the Figure as a way of uncovering form. One way to approach drawing is to deliberately subdue or begin altogether with the absence of line. In this workshop we will begin our drawings in light and shadow masses.. thinking painterly. The shaping of shadow masses against the shape of light mass as a compositional element that can draw the eye through a composition as opposed to a linear movement.

Working with a live model, we’ll cover both quick gesture poses and longer sustained studies to investigate the relationship between movement, structure, and space. Steven will demonstrate gesture in relation to the development of form, how movement and dimension in space are intertwined and how gravity gives weight to the figure and substantiates its presence.
