What makes a painting visually compelling? Is it what you paint or how you paint it?

In this six-week class we will explore the principles of design, composition, and meaning in painting. Together we will learn: 

• How to select subjects for a compelling visual narrative

• How to apply design principles when staging items 

• How to choose the best overall composition for a final painting

The first three weeks we’ll cover core principles in the context of still life. The final three weeks we’ll practice applying those principles to other genres including landscape, portraits, figures, florals, and/or animals according to student inclination. 

Students will leave with practical references to guide future work as well as an increased intuition for the visual feelings and emotional meanings that make a painting subconsciously compelling.
