Composition is essential to good painting: It creates expression, structure and meaning! The principles of composition involve much more than a system of rules or the placement of objects. In fact, sometimes the best compositions break all the rules. Composition concerns the entire relationship of parts to whole, from the individual brushstroke to the largest shapes. It is about the distribution of light and the construction of space and movement inside the rectangle. In this workshop we will use still life to explore compositional ideas through the use of color, value, pictorial space and mark-making. Maggie will work with you to gain new insight and skill in composition emphasizing light as the organizer of color and shape. Aesthetic principles and painting techniques will be presented while individual attention and group critiques will help you evaluate your work.
