Portrait Drawing a` la Sargent

Although John Singer Sargent is best known for his portrait paintings, his charcoal portraits are arguably just as marvelous in their bravura style and expressiveness.

This two day class will explore his method for capturing a fresh and artful likeness from life using charcoal.

After we analyze and discuss several Master charcoal portraits, Jim will demonstrate Sargent's process for constructing the head, in value stages, sculpturally, before adding accents and features. We will also focus on edges and line quality.

There will be a live model on the 2nd day of the workshop.
