Still life and the figure will be the departure point for this three-day workshop. Students will work from direct observation and from memory and will practice making work that draws from multiple sources. Exercises in painting, drawing, and collage will focus on loosening up and on developing new approaches to shape and composition. The emphasis throughout the workshop will be on experimentation and fostering individual expression. Slide shows of the work of modern and contemporary artists will supplement the exercises. Nancy Gruskin lives and works in Concord, Massachusetts. She received a B.A. in Art History and Studio Art from Connecticut College and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Art History from Boston University. Her work emerges from her everyday experiences and is based on a combination of direct observation, photographs, invention and memory. Exhibitions include: Galatea Fine Art, Boston, MA; Musa Collective, Boston, MA; Bowery Gallery, New York, NY; First Street Gallery, New York, NY; Prince Street Gallery, New York, NY; Art at Kings Oaks, Newtown, PA; Able Baker Contemporary, Portland, ME; and Room 83 Spring, Watertown, MA. She teaches painting and collage at the Concord Center for the Visual Arts in Concord, Massachusetts.
