September 19-21

9:30-4:30 pm
California artist, Mike Hernandez, is an expert in gouache, oil and acrylic painting. In this workshop, he will cover the important fundamentals of composition, color relationships, lighting, atmospheric perspective, simplification and shape design through the use of gouache. This is a great workshop for any artist that would like to learn how to capture a sense of natural and or stylized lighting/color into their work. Many plein air artists find traveling with goauche to be easier and more convenient than oil while not compromising the ability to capture a beautiful plein air study. Oil painters are welcome in this workshop and can choose to paint in oil or gouache.
Mike will start off the 3-day workshop with a lecture in the studio on Saturday morning. The lecture will also be live on Zoom for those students not comfortable meeting in person.. The lecture will include still digital images and information about using gouache on location. Mike will provide demonstrations in gouache in the afternoon, covering color, composition design, lighting design, simplification and atmospheric perspective. .
To allow for social distancing during the covid-19 pandemic, this workshop will be plein air.
Bio:
A native Angeleno, Mike Hernandez is a plein air painter skilled in gouache, oil and acrylic, who’s works have been featured in several on-line publications as well as galleries. His process began as a young child, painting still life images. Influenced by the likes of Edgar Payne, Sorolla and Franz Bischoff, Mike soon explored the foundations of color and light in the outdoors – striving to find the beauty in the ordinary. With a palette that resides at the crossroads between industrial and landscapes, he finds inspiration anywhere from the Eastern Sierra range to the muddy concrete banks of the Los Angeles River. Mike studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, graduating with a B.A. in 1998. Currently he is a Production Designer at Dreamworks Animation as well as a nation-wide sought-after workshop instructor. His works can be found in several private collections around the world.
