Portrait painting is arguably the most rigorous genre of representational painting because it requires mastery at many levels, most notably excellent drawing. Because portraiture has too many facets to study in a single day, we will limit our goal to painting a portrait study with a limited palette.
Anders Zorn often used a very limited palette; black, red, yellow ochre and white. This limited palette greatly simplifies color mixing and stresses the importance of color temperature and intensity. For a beginner, the limited palette reduces the complexity of a full palette. For the more advanced painter the challenge is to create color relationships that somewhat mimic those of a full palette - as Zorn repeatedly accomplished.
During this one day class, learn how to manage drawing, value, edges and limited color in a condensed time period while capturing a likeness.
