Brushwork and Composition
August 20-23, 2014
9 am-4 pm

Wisconsin-native, Kenn Backhaus has been an active professional artist for over thirty-five years.  He has received many awards for his efforts in the Fine Art profession including some of the coveted, Best of Show, Artist Choice and Collectors Choice award.

This "Brushwork and Composition" workshop is open to the level of intermediate through advanced artists. Instruction will focus on the design and spacial arrangement or composition of the canvas along with defining and introducing expressive brushwork.  The creative process is based on a compilation of fundamentals and principals, which are essential in the development of a quality painting. This will be an indoor workshop with lectures, instruction and demonstrations derived from field studies along with the aid of additional photographic reference of the field study scene.  Kenn will explain the traditional principals and foundations which will be our guideline in creating a studio painting with a stronger and more meaningful composition from the field studies or reference.  We will explore the importance of these principals and foundations to better our studio painting skills.

Creating a strong composition teamed together with expressive and controlled brushwork results in a more dynamic finished painting.

Kenn will work with students to help further develop their individual style. He will identify strong and weak tendencies and help students to build on the strong ones and try to overcome the weak areas.  The workshop will include lectures, demonstrations, one on one critiques and individual tutoring.
