Portrait Drawing
with charcoal or paint

The most fundamental element of successful portraiture is capturing a likeness - in other words, excellent drawing.  This class will focus on fail-safe portrait drawing methods which rely on acute seeing for accurate and artistic drawing.  Relationships between shapes (proportions), values and edges are key.

Students are encouraged to work in charcoal on paper, but may draw with paint on canvas if preferred..  This class is designed as a precursor to full color portrait painting study.

Jim Himsworth will discuss and demonstrate each method and will provide individual help throughout the class.

Since receiving his BFA from Philadelphia College of Art, Jim Himsworth has worked as a portrait painter, illustrator and fine artist.  His portrait and figure painting education continued at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The University of the Arts and Studio Incamminati.

Beginning in 2000, he left commercial art to focus exclusively on portrait painting and fine art.  He was awarded First Prize in the American Society of Portrait Artists' 2001 International Portrait Competition.  Since then, Jim continues to win portrait painting and fine art awards including a Merit Award at the 2012 Portrait Society of America's Members Only Competition.  Most recently, he was commissioned to paint the former U.S. Congressman and current judge Edward G. Biester.

His work has been exhibited at The Art Student's League, The Rittenhouse Square Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, Woodmere Art Museum, Michener Art Museum, West Chester University, Gratz Gallery, Sabine Rose Gallery, Mixed Media Gallery and The Philadelphia Sketch Club.
