Portrait Painting from Photographs

Rarely does a modern-day portrait painter have the opportunity to work entirely from life. Use of photographic reference is common and often necessary. Learning to work successfully from photographs requires good photography, life-painting experience and excellent interpretive skills. This class will focus on interpreting photographic reference rather than simply copying.

Bring your best portrait image(s) (printed or digital) from which to draw or paint. Your subject could be human or animal. Jim will help you identify and successfully resolve common, as well as unique, challenges present in your reference. The goal is to complete a portrait that exceeds the limited aesthetic quality inherent in most (portrait) photography.

You may choose your medium; pencil, charcoal, watercolor, oil, etc.

Because this class precedes the holidays, consider making this portrait a personalized gift!
