Beginning Oil Painting Supply List

*Bring what you have. There are a variety of possibilities for painting materials.
I have included information about what I use, but there are lots of options. Choose what best works for you. The exception to this is Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits
it's a must.

PALETTE

Options:
a. Disposable Palette Pad 12” x 16”
b. Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Box 12” x 16” and a disposable palette pad
c. Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Box and a 12” x 16” piece of glass edged in tape d. Pochade Box with Tripod
e. French Easel

*I started with a Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Box and a piece of glass edged in electrical tape. Michael's will cut the glass to fit the box. I currently have a pochade box and tripod.

Painting Surfaces

Linen or Canvas boards or Stretched Linen or Canvas. Bring a supply of surfaces in these sizes:
9”x 12”
11” x 14”

12” x 16”

BRUSHES

A combination of bristle and soft brushes of various types and sizes. The types include: Filberts, Extra Long Filberts, Flats, and Rounds * For Bristle Brushes, I use:

PAINT

The essential colors are: Titanium Zinc White, Cad Yellow Light, Cad Red Light, Ultramarine Blue * I use:

Gamblin: Titanium Zinc White, Cad Yellow Light, Cad Red Light, Alizarin Permanent, Dioxazine Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean, Viridian, Sap Green

Winsor & Newton: Cad Green Pale Rembrandt: Transparent Oxide Red Grumbacher: Thalo Green, Thalo Blue

Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits & an air-tight container

* I use the Holbein Metal Brush Washer. I have a big one for my studio and a small one for on the go. They can be ordered from DickBlick.com.

Gray Scale & Value Finder, and a Color Wheel

Other essentials:

  1. Sketch Pad and Drawing Pencils

  2. Palette Knife for mixing color

  3. Edge Scraper to clean your palette

  4. Nitrile Disposable Gloves (Kroger's Pharmacy)

  5. Viva Paper Towels

  6. Small Plastic Trash Bag
